about Breathwork (BBTRS)

“The first truth, Buddha taught his disciples, is that suffering is part of the human condition. If we simply try to avoid confronting painful experiences, there is no way to begin the healing process. In fact, this denial creates the very conditions that promote and prolong unnecessary suffering.”
― Peter A. Levine, Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body
At its core, Breathwork is a powerful practice that taps into the innate wisdom of our bodies. It's not just about the air we inhale and exhale; it's a journey into self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. But why is Breathwork particularly significant in the context of healing trauma?
Understanding trauma
Although the word trauma has found its way into mainstream culture, many people use this term with only a limited understanding of its meaning and significance. Trauma in its various forms, can leave deep imprints on our mental, physical and spiritual well-being. It can stem from experiences that have overwhelmed our ability to cope and process emotions effectively. Unresolved trauma can manifest as sleep disorders, persistent fatigue, nightmares, avoidance of emotions, sensations, anxiety, depression, physical ailments, fear of recurrence, not connected to self or to loved ones, feelings of being all alone, or even inhibit our personal growth and happiness.
For instance, trauma is often equated with extremely shocking and painful events, such as physical or sexual abuse, war, or a natural disaster. Yet can also include accidents, invasive medical procedures, emotional abuse, death and loss. Or can result from ongoing and continued stress, fear and conflict. Researchers increasingly confirm that it is not just specific events or situations that cause trauma, rather how a person perceives and reacts to the event is what better determines whether trauma develops; in fact, different people can experience the same events with widely varying degrees of psychological consequences, depending on their emotional vulnerability and the resilience of their nervous system. Trauma can also be inherited from previous generations.

The role of breathwork
Breathwork is a dynamic tool for addressing trauma because it operates at the intersection of mind and body. When we experience trauma, our bodies often respond with tense muscles, shallow breathing, and a heightened state of alertness. Breathwork invites us to engage with these physical and emotional manifestations, allowing us to release tightness and tension deep within the body's core and foster a sense of safety and ease. We can also use Breathwork as a powerful tool to guide our nervous system from "fight/ flight /freeze/ collapse / dissociation" to a state of deep calm and relaxation. It's crucial to recognize that the world of Breathwork encompasses a rich variety of styles, each offering distinct and profound benefits to our overall well-being—mind, body, and spirit.
breath as a bridge
Your breath serves as a bridge between your conscious and subconscious mind. Through focused and intentional breathing, you can gently access and process unresolved emotions. It provides a safe space to explore your inner world, release suppressed feelings, and begin the journey towards healing.
healing and transformation
Breathwork acts as a catalyst for profound transformation. It empowers you to reconnect with your body, release emotional baggage, and rewrite the narrative of your life. It's a journey that requires courage, self-compassion, and for many clients professional guidance. Together, we embark on a path of self-discovery and healing, using the breath as a trusted companion. By integrating Breathwork into your wellness journey, you are taking a vital step towards addressing and healing the impacts of trauma. It's a practice that honors your inner wisdom and offers a pathway to reconnection, rewiring, and resilience.

Testimonials
"During my initial session with Sue, I felt like I was somehow being introduced to my body for the first time in my life! I've experienced so much healing through this work, and have gushed too many of my friends about the experience. Sue is so intuitive and supportive that it's impossible not to feel safe with her." -Chelsey, Wheaton
"I was curious about Breathwork as a technique for personal growth. I was surprised by the depth of the experience. Sue is very reassuring in guiding you through the entire process. Her explanations are clear and she is so good at putting a person at ease. Thanks, Sue!" -Lee, Chicago
"For a long time, I had not felt safe emotionally. I was trying to find that space but wasn’t sure how. At that time I was seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist to deal with my trauma. Talk therapy was only scratching the surface of my trauma. Although I was able to talk through it, I still felt like something was missing. Sue introduced me to Bio-Dynamic Breath and Trauma Release and it was an experience that changed my life. I appreciate Sue for her patience, honesty, and knowledge of the therapy. However, most important was her support throughout my journey. Thank you Sue, for introducing me to spaces and places in my body that I was unaware of, and know that I appreciate you more than you will ever know." - Kenitra, Blue Island
"I found the experience of Breathwork very beneficial. Sue is very knowledgeable, she allowed me to work at my own pace and seemed to intuitively know and understand when and where my body was stuck. I now have an increased ability to have a deeper connection with my body, as well as the ability to recognize and understand what was being held in my body. The stored energy that was misused trying to confine tension is now released and utilized in other more satisfying pursuits. I would highly recommend Sue to anyone who in need of this work or just interested in Breathwork." - Eileen, Oak Lawn
