About Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness Meditation is a Western researched-based from of meditation derived from a 2,500 year old Buddist practice called Vipassana or "Insight Meditation". This style of meditation develops the practitioner's ability to extend compassionate attention to both the inner and outer world. There are many different kinds of meditation. For example, some are designed to help us relax; others are meant to produce altered states of consciousness. Mindfulness meditation is unique in that it is not directed towards getting us to be different from how we truly are. Instead, it helps us become aware of what is already true moment by moment. The goal of any mindfulness technique is to achieve a state of alert, focus relaxation by deliberately paying attention to thoughts and sensations without judgment.
A consistent practice of Mindfulness Meditation increases one's capacity to observe experiences without passing judgement, and has been scientifically proven to improve mental and physical health as well as overall well-being. In fact, in the last 50 years, over 1500 studies have found Mindfulness Meditation to be clinically effective in managing mental and physical health concerns such as stress, anxiety and panic, chronic pain, depression, obsessive thinking, and a variety of physical conditions. Although we all innately possess the quality of Mindfulness, very few of us learn how to recognize or cultivate this capacity. For this reason, practitioners can greatly benefit from learning from an experienced instructor.
